SHELTER, a 2001 surf movie by Moonshine Conspiracy: a surf collaborative formed by Jack Johnson, Emmet Malloy, and Chris Malloy in 1998. It was shot on 16mm film and follows the lives of wandering surfers (professionals and free surfers alike) who take up residence on a farm in Australia over two months.
This movie lives in my soul. It's a beautiful representation of what it means to be a Surfer: camaraderie, music, shaping, art, jam sessions, compassionate dialogue, introspection, calmness, fluidity, fun, heartwarming, stylistic, wanderlust, bonzers, fishes, doors, thrusters, twins, and discovery.
The soundtrack story-tells and lingers; a visceral connection to the genuine spirit of surfing; creating an attachment that doesn't soon depart, 22 years on.
The iconic opening scene shifts seamlessly from a luggage valet at the airport - an older gentleman who happens to be a Veteran with a simple, openhearted way of describing humanity (whose quotes are presented on two RADIO the universe T-shirts).. to Rob Machado who casually passes him on the exterior of the airport, boards and guitar in tow, toward adventure....... to the aerial view of an older iteration Landrover making its way down the remote beachside of Oz no doubt in search of their peaky liquid playground.
From there its a revelatory masterpiece of surfing and stories, spoken and unspoken, of shaping and friendship, of the carefree nature of our sport. This movie captured the essence of surfing's soul and character... and I think you'll love every minute.
For those that haven't had the pleasure it's up on YouTube. Enjoy!
